O.K. so I got my 7 up and running again. I cleaned off the sparkplugs and
put the distributor back in (after priming the oil pump again for good
measure) and it took a while for it turn over. I had to mess with the
ignition timing to get her started. After she started I adjusted the ignition
timing to 10 degrees BTDC where I always had it she idles fine just
shakes a little (possible misfire). Now the engine accelerates but is very
shakey and sputters at first then accelerates smoothly (I think thats just
from the misfire) and if i turn it off and wait for about a minute she won't
start again. After toying with the timing again, she started and idled fine,
this is at about 16 degrees BTDC, but wouldn't accelerate without dieing.
I'm at wits end. She either wont start at the correct ignition time, or starts
but won't acclereate at the way too advanced ignition timing.
Any help at all will be appreciated. |

| I just finished up for the day and now its starting and acclerating at 16 degrees BTDC. It's pretty much running normal. I'm gonna leave it like this for now. |

| could the jack shaft have jumped a tooth? When you set the distributor timing did you also check the timing on the cam shaft? |

| I did not, but how could the jackshaft skip a tooth just by removing and installing a distributor? |

What was done to the car? Sounds like the Cam timing is off, set your timing mark on 0 and take your oil cap off and see if the cam mark is lined up TDC with the first Cam BRG cap. Each has a slot.
Thanks

| I modified one of my jack shaft assemblies to have two pins through the gear rather than a single pin. One time I had the pin break and bind up again a couple of teeth off. |

So the chain was removed, I would check the cam timing.

Does anyone know what size the crank bolt is? As for checking to see if cylinder one is at tdc, can't I just do the old screwdriver through the sparkplug hole trick? Oh and I never removed the timing chain, just the distributor.
I wish I had to the money to replace this engine and start fresh. |

Ok so get this, I started up the car and checked for any misfires that could have been throwing me off. No misfires. So I let it run until hot and closed off the choke. I adjusted the ignition timing back to 10 degrees btdc. Now it idles fine, accelerates fine, and will start up just fine. I want to add that I found this wire coimng off of the ignition coil and it was shorting to ground. I checked the wire in the diagram and it has nothing to do with the ignition. My father was the previous owner and at one point he had an alarm system and an electric fuel pump hooked up to the car. My guess is the wire has something to do with one of those. Is it possible the wire had something to do with my previos problems?
Anyway, it runs fine, just a little shakey probably because the carbs need tuning again, but I'm just gonna rebuild them. One of them sprung a small leak at the float bowl and the carb mount is falling apart and is being held together with a tie strap.(damn Victoria British! this is the second time thats happened with there mounts) This will be a good chance to clean the carb properly and try to fix that FASD so I can put a manual choke conversion back on.
I thank you for all your help. |

Thanks, but I'm not sure that I had found what caused the problems. HS6's? I'm guessing you mean SU carbs? I don't really wanna spend so much on that engine. I just want it to run right until I can accumulate enough cash to replace the engine including carb.
Just out of curiosity, are the SU's easier to maintain than the Zenith's? |
