My TR&/8 has an oil leak from the oil pump. Apparently, when the Rover 3.5 was rebuilt, the screws holding the pump body to the timing cover were over-tightened, causing the threads in the aluminum cover to strip.

I have tried to stop the leak using various sealants, thread locks, etc., to no avail.

How can I repair the stripped threads without taking off the timing cover?

Thanks in advance to whomsoever can help!

I can't remember what is in the way, or potentially in the way, on a stock car, but on the race car, the pump housing is accessible from underneath the car and *most* of the threads for the bolts that hold it on are accessible.

You may be able to reach them with a Helicoil kit. I'd take a look at that first, versus trying to remove the front cover to repair them.

I guess as a last resort you could fill the suckers up with JB Weld and epoxy the oil pump housing to the front cover, but that sounds like a recipe for a massive fail.

Jeff young,

Thanks for your reply; yes, the pump is accessible. I have done R&R on it several times to try to stop the leak.

Do they make heli-coils in that small a diameter? I have not found such yet.

The problem with JB weld is that while it may hold the bolt in place, it doesn't allow the bolt threads to pull in the pump snugly, thus allowing the leak to continue. I have never tried drilling and tapping JB weld .... is that even possible?

Mike

I should be able to get heli coil for that if you need them.
Thanks Woody

Thanks, Woody!

I'll probably take you up on that once I resolve issues with my TR7 and get that sold and out of the way of the TR7/8. I have not found the small sizes locally.

No, you can't drill and tap JB Weld...or you could, but it won't hold.

Like Woody says, they make both Helicoils and Timesert threat repair kits in small sizes. You need to find a local specialty tools/parts/nuts/bolts store. We have a local one like that -- it's like a McMaster or Fastenal except local owned. Has all kinds of unique tools and fasteners (rivnuts, etc.).
